The genus Agapanthus, originating from South Africa, includes perennial plants which are very easy to cultivate and which produce spectacular bloomings throughout summer. The Agapanthus flowers are bell-shaped and collected in generally blue inflorescences, although some varieties bear white flowers. Both deciduous and perennial leaf species exist and it is important to know to which category the plant belongs in order to be aware of its cultivation needs so that it can be arranged in the right way. These plants, in fact, do not like to be handled excessively. The perennial leaf Agapanthus can be kept outdoors during the winter, albeit only in areas in which frosts are infrequent. Until the first shoots have appeared, the pot with the plant should be kept in a sheltered place and watered with moderation. During this period it is appropriate to fertilize every two / three weeks using a liquid fertilizer diluted in the irrigation water.

It is an evergreen plant, commonly named Felicia, it is characterized by celestial flowers, similar to those of the daisy, which appear from May until autumn. It prefers exposures to full sun and regular watering. It doesn’t withstand harsh winters.

L’agatea ben si adatta alla vita in piena terra o anche in vaso, predilige terreni sciolti e molto ben drenati, anche sabbiosi; si pone a dimora al sole, o a mezz’ombra. Si tratta di una pianta sempreverde, che continua a vegetare anche durante la stagione fredda, se si trova nelle giuste condizioni di coltivazione. Per tutta la bella stagione produce sottili steli, che si alzano al di sopra delle foglie, e portano piccoli capolini con centro dorato e petali esterni di colore blu cielo.

Alstroemeria, also known as “lily of Peru”, is a genus in the the family Amaryllidaceae hailing from central and south America. It is a perennial shrub which bears wonderful flowers similar to small lilies with distinctive brown-dottet or striped petals. It is much appreciated for the production of cut flowers, however it is cultivated in pots as well, appearing in this case as a thick bush with light-green leaves and with thick and durable bloomings. It prefers sunny expositions, nontheless it well withstands low temperatures.

Anigozanthos is commonly known as “kangaroo paw” because of the shape of its flowers. It is a rhizomatous perennial plant hailing from Austrialia. It prefers sunny or semi-shaded places; these plants do not fear the cold and they can withstand periods of intense cold. Sometimes during the winter it loses the aerial part which they grow back in spring. A watery lymph is stored in the roots of the plant, which allows it to withstand long periods of drought without problems.

It belongs to the family Scrophulariaceae and it originates from mediterranean regions. The Antirrhinum is a rustic perennial plant (cultivated as an annual or, at least, biennial) with a woody trunk at the basis and variously coloured inflorescences at the end. Its common name “snapdragon” derives from the peculiar shape of the flowers that have a tubular corolla having two formations similar to lips (the upper one is divided in two lobes and the lower on divided in three ones), which snap open like a dragon’s mouth when pressed at its sides. It prefers full sunlight and it well withstands low temperatures.

Asteriscus is a plant in the family Compositae hailing from Mediterranean regions. It is a small perennial shrub with oval, thick, dark-green leaves. The flowers have the typical shape of the daisy, they are entirely yellow, quite sturdy and long-lasting. In spite of being an easy plant to cultivate, it is highly decorative because of the impressive golden cushions it creates in the garden. It blooms during spring and the flowering lasts until autumn. It well withstands the winter cold.

More than a thousand species belongs to the family Begoniaceae, and they all originate from tropical and subtropical areas. The ideal cultivation temperature is around 15° throughout the year; these plants thrive in intense light but should not be put in direct sunlight. During the winter they should be kept in a cool environment, in which temperatures should not drop below 13° C. Begonias should be watered quite often depending on external temperatures; however, it is best to let the topsoil dry out before watering it again. In particular, during winter watering should be drastically reduced.

Begonia Elatior, which is a perennial species belonging to the family Begoniaceae, shows big buds with bright colours such as yellow, pink, while and orange. It grows up to 50 cm in average and its dark green leaves are fleshy and glossy. Delicate clusters of flowers bloom on an erect, rigid stem.

It belongs to the family Campanulaceae and it originates from Europe, North America and Asia. The bellflower “Victoria – Portenschlagiana” is a perennial plant which produces a thick bush covered in bell-shaped, purple or lilac flowers. Particularly suitable for decorating gardens, this variety is famous for its flowers, considerably larger than those of other species, and for its long-lasting blooming.

It is a perennial species that grows well in any position from full sun to full shade; it doesn’t fear the cold. It needs abundant and frequent waterings in order to avoid that the soil gets dry.

Bidens is a genus in the family Asteraceae and it originates from central America. It is widespread all over the world as one of the most common plants used for decorating balconies. It is a perennial plant but it is cultivate as an annual one. It looks like a shrub with thin and green/grayish leaves. It is completely covered by typically star-shaped flowers with yellow petals; it needs full sunlight and it dies when temperatures start dropping at the beginning of winter.

Bignonia campsis is a climbing plant in the family Bignoniaceae, in which more than 700 different species of shrubs, herbaceous plants and trees can be found. Its leaves are oval, oblong and dentate like in other varieties of the same genus. Their green colour is especially glossy during spring and summer, while turning to yellow and red in autumun and winter. Being a deciduous plant, the leaves eventually wither and fall out. Thanks to its suckers, it is a climber perfect as groundcover as well.

It belongs to the family Rutaceae and it originates from Australia. It is an evergreen shrub typical of the coastal areas and it has small and deep-green leaves with an unmistakable fragrance, sour and stinging, typical of citrus fruits (as a matter of fact, it belongs to the same botanical family). It bears small, starred, pink flowers with four petals. The flowers are rich of essential oils which are used for the preparation of emotional infusions which are ideal in order to find calmness and serenity and which can be helpful against obsessions and insomnia. It prefers sunny and well ventilated positions; its blooming could last throughout the year.

The Boronia is an Australian genus belonging to the family Rutaceae: after a revision, around 150 species, all australian, were confirmed to be in this genus. They mostly are shrubs of small and medium dimensions. The fragrance of the Boronia is quite complex, strong and aromatic, with a citrus scents. Its cultivation is regarded as very difficult, as it requires particular conditions: partial shade in a sheltered position, sandy, moist yet well drained soil, which must be neutral or subacid.
