It is a very beautiful and evergreen shrub originating from China: it is a slow-growing plant, with glossy and coriaceous foliage preferably to be cultivated in open ground; throughout the spring numerous small pink or white star flowers bloom at the apex of the branches. It has to be placed in a well-lit place, in the sun or in partial shade; it prefers rich and fertile soils. It suffers from excessive humidity. The species Campsis grandiflora (synonyms are Bignonia grandiflora, Campsis chinensis, Tecoma grandiflora) originates from Japan and China. It is a fragile plant, it doesn’t withstand low winter temperatures and it isn’t particularly rustic. It has an impressive development. It blooms at the beginning of the summer (June) and for the whole summertime (September). They have to be transplanted in full sun and regularly watered.
It is known in different regions with different names: in Italian it is called porcellana, procaccia, purselana (Liguria), erba grassa (Lombardia), barzellana (Sardegna). In ancient Egypt it was already known as medical plant. It probably originates from Asia. It has reddish, fleshy, very branched stems and a prostrate shape which makes it an excellent groundcover plant: from June until the first autumn cold numerous rose-shaped flowers bloom on the apex of the branches, with wrinkled looking petals that close in the dark. It needs sun and regular watering.
