Freesia is a genus of herbaceous plants hailing from southern Africa which includes about fifteen botanical species. They all produce small round corms. It is suitable for Mediterranean climates and is rather sensitive to cold. Every single bulb produces a small tuft of ribbon-like, erect, fairly rigid, light-green leaves; from the center of the leaves during the summer a thin and erect stem develops, bearing numerous small trumpet-shaped flowers. It blooms during the spring and it needs direct sunlight.
The Vinca or Pervinca is a herbaceous and evergreen plant originating from Europe (very common in Italy) and it belongs to the family Apocynaceae. It could be cultivated both with erect shape and hanging shape (Vinca so-called “Mediterranean”, transplanted in basket). It has a thick shrub with oval leaves, extended and shiny green. It produces a lot of little and delicate flowers, with five pastel colored petals, from white to pink, red, lilac and purple.
In Italy the chrysanthemum blooms at the end of october and for this reason it is associated to All Saints’ Day. Actually, however, it has traditionally been associated to positive values, and its name stands as a proof to this: it comes from ancient Greek and literally translates to “golden flower”. It is a genus in the family Compositae, and most varieties bloom in autumn, from late October to early November. They prefer to live in a warm-temperate environment.
The Sanvitalia (Sanvitalia procumbens) is an annual plant suitable for borders and rocky gardens, which produces countless little yellow flowers throughout the summer and late autumn. It originates from Mexico.
Coreopsis look like small shining suns, very easy to cultivate, both in pots and in the garden. There are many species of Coreopsis but the most common are Coreopsis Grandiflora and Coreopsis Lanceolata. Originating from North America, even if they are perennials they tend to dry completely during the winter and then they reappear at the beginning of the spring. They prefer sunny places and they don’t fear the cold.
It belongs to the Violaceae family and it originates from Europe and America. It is a small and evergreen plant known for its white, yellow, orange, red, lilac, violet or speckled bicolor flowers. It is a green light bush with little and curved leaves. The shades of the colors are different and there are varieties with petals that have a dark spot inside (“Pansy” or “Saint Joseph violet”, since the shades remind the ones of the cape of the Saint). In the mild climate zones the blooming could be forced and it is in autumn until winter.
