Duranta repens is a small, crawling or partially erect shrub which is native to Central America. The thin semi-woody stems are densely branched, the leaves are oval and small; it can be evergreen as long as it grows in temperate areas with mild winters. It prefers sunny places: poor light conditions can lead to an equally scarce blooming. However, it does not fear the cold and it can even withstand short periods of frost.
The Lotus is a genus of herbaceous plant belonging to the family Fabacee (or Legumionous) that includes over a hundred species. The species of the genus Lotus are almost all perennial herbs. They typically have trifoliate compound leaves that have two large stipules at the basis; this conveys the impression of leaves composed of five leaflets instead of three, as it actually is. Some species, however, really have leaves composed of more than three leaflets (imparipinnate), up to about fifteen. The flowers, irregular, with the typical papilionaceous corolla, are almost always yellow but they can have red shades. They are collected in small inflorescences made up of 3-10 flowers. The fruit is a legume.
It is a small shrub with shiny green foliage. If it is rubbed it releases a strong citrusy fragrance. It shows an elegant foliage during the spring and the summer. In September it is filled with bunches with small pink fruits and later, in autumn, its foliage turns yellow. It withstands both the great summer heat and peaks of cold up to about -5 ° C. It should be exposed to full sun but it can also stay in partially shaded places. The ground should be neutral, fertile and well drained because it doesn’t withstand water stagnation.
Cyclamen is one of the most popular houseplants, especially because its beautiful flowers bloom during the winter, thus brightening up the coldest months. It belongs to the family Primulaceae and it includes different species, all hailing from eastern Mediterranean. It is important to keep the cultivation environment humid and with a temperature not higher than 15°.
Exuberant and unusual, the Penstemons bloom throughout the summer, bringing joy and color even when the other plants, for the oppressive heat, take a break. It originates from North America and it belongs to a particularly small variety that grows in the mountains on stony ground, very close to the ground. The plant forms several spikes, which are covered with many small flowers similar to the bells: blue, purple and red. It needs full sun and it is resistant to cold.
