It belongs to the family Asteraceae and it originates from Central America (Peru and Mexico) but it has spread in Europe since the Middle Age. The Sunflower, which owes its name to its characteristic heliotropic behavior (the inflorescence is always oriented towards the sun), has a long robust stem with large and wrinkled leaves and giant inflorescences with yellow petals and dark disc. In addition to being an ornamental plant, its use is known for the production of vegetable oil from its seeds.
