Lavandula Angustifolia

This perennial, ever-green herbaceous plant in the family Labiatae originates from the Mediterranean basin but it is widespread in the Indian subcontinent as well as in certain islands of the Atlantic Ocean. The aromatic oil used both in the cosmetic industry and as a spice for cooking is found in glands produced inside the spike-shaped violet flowers, which grow on top of thin, elongated leaves. The stoechas variety has silver-shaded leaves and gives bigger flowers with a deeper purple hue on top of which a distinctive tuft of bracts grows.

Lippia Citriodora

The Lippia Citriodora belongs to the family Verbenaceae. It is an aromatic plant that, if lightly touched, it spreads an aromatic and unmistakable lemon fragrance in the air. Like all the aromatic herbs, it hardly tolerates stagnant water but, at the same time, it needs abundant watering. Blooming occurs from June to August and even up to the beginning of autumn in areas with mild climate.

Ficus Carica

It is a fruit tree belonging in Moraceae and originating from Western Asia and it has a particularly developed root system, which makes it resistant to droughts. It has a robust, greyish trunk and large, rough, lobed leaves; its distinctive sap is sticky and milky. The Ficus Carica has two different botanical forms: the male, “caprifig” and the female, “true fig”. Both forms produce the common round and fleshy fruits with green or violet peel, only the fruits of the female plants, however, are edible since they are fertilized. The principal responsible for the process of “caprification” is an insect, the Blastophaga psenes.

It includes seventy five varieties. A common feature is the almost total absence of leaves: however, they tend to fall completely once the first flowers appear. It blooms from May to August. Basically the Broom is a mediterranean plant so the warm and sunny weather is fundamental for its growth: it normally lives in very arid areas and it does not need a lot of water. If the plant has been planted in the ground it is possible to water it sporadically. If, instead, it has been planted in a pot, it is better to water it more regularly.

Mandevillea

It is an evergreen climbing plant belonging to the Apocinaceae and it originates from Southern America. The Mandevillea Suaveolens is vaguely similar to the Dipladenia but it’s different from it because its leaves are bigger, wrinkled (particularly evident in the “Alice du Pont”) and brighter. It is different as well for the size of the flowers that are larger and slightly perfumed.

Solanum Jasminoides

The Solanum Jasmionoides belongs to the family Solanaceae and it originates from Brasil. It is an evergreen climbing shrub with glossy green leaves and with five petals and pure white flowers, sometimes tending to pink or blue, collected in bunches at the end of the branches. It is also called “Jasmine at night” because the flowers give off a sweet smell just at night.

Oleander

It belongs to the family Apocynaceae and it originates from the eastern basin of the Mediterranean and Asia. It is an evergreen shrub that spontaneously grows along the coast and waterways. It has long, sharp and light green leaves; it produces large tubular flowers with five petals that are red, pink or white. After the blooming the fruits (that are absolutely inedible) mature in the shape of an elongated pod. In the pods there are feathery seeds.
